For the older person remaining in their own home as they age is often preferred, better for their health and wellbeing, and less costly for the health and care system as a whole. Yet budgets for homecare are squeezed meaning individuals either don’t get any or enough care and carers get paid minimum wage or just above for providing care.
Having looked inside many care agencies two things strike me. Firstly a third of the homecare budget is spent on arranging rather than providing care. Secondly, commissioning and regulatory constraints mean, usually a preset list of activities are provided regardless of changing daily needs of the individual.
Healthpartners has started work on an exciting project to look at digitising homecare to address these and other issues. Get in touch if you are interested in this topic.
